Great Wolf Lodge

Busch Gardens: Now Open Year Round

Busch Gardens has extended their annual calendar once again to include Winter Weekends, Mardi Gras, and St. Patricks Day. We recently attended the Mardi Gras event and caught the Carnaval Imaginique, a sort of daredevil talent show, and we caught the Mardi Party DJ, who was actually spinning 90's tunes.

The lines for rides were excellent, but the lines for food were very long. There were several specialty items for the Mardi Gras event, but we were not able to try any. Open for kids is Oscar's Wiggly Worm, Prince Elmo's Spire, Der Autobarn Jr, Flutter-Sputter, Bug-A-Dug, Kinder Karussel, The Little Gliders, Li'l Clydes, Der Roto Baron, plus the playground at Sesame Street Forest of Fun and Land of the Dragons.

There are other shows, and I'd like to see the Samba Jamboree, but we didn't have time while we were there. The Mardi Gras event goes until February 27th, so get there before time runs out. The next event will be St. Patrick's Day from March 4-27.

Great Wolf Lodge Covid Update

We first visited Great Wolf Lodge when RT was just a toddler and although we were just there for the day, we loved it.  I've linked a whole post on all the details about the resort. That was pre-Covid, so when we planned out trip for this fall I was nervous of how it would impact our experience. Here's what changes have been made and what to expect.
First, masks are worn everywhere but the in the pool and while eating. Chairs and couches have been removed from the lobby. There are seats in the water park and fabric disinfectant all around to spray before you sit. For the dance parties and story times, each family sits in a square on the floor which is cleaned between activity. No cleaning services are offered within your room during your stay. Because they are short staffed, the lazy river closes from time to time, and the area with the basketball hoops and lillipads is also closed.
We stayed two nights, and during that time we bowled, danced, ate ice cream, listened to a story, did arts and crafts, had dance parties, played tons of arcade games, and of course... spent so much time in the water park. The service was outstanding; every employee went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. We got really lucky; September is a slow time for them so the place wasn't crowded at all. We really enjoyed our stay. EDIT: There is a current GWL Groupon, linked here!

Rainy Days in Hampton Roads

Weather in Hampton Roads is unpredictable, but when we know it's going to rain, we head to one of these places.  This list is long, but scroll through to find something to do this week! **All of these are open as of Feb. 17, 2021. Please follow Covid procedures.
Go try a free class at My Gym. The first class is always free and they run classes for different age groups all throughout the week. They offer classes in gymnastics, art, stem, dance, sports, and more. There are locations in Virginia Beach and Newport News.

The Virginia Air and Space Museum just reopened with their brand new Space Explorer Gallery as well as renovations to their Imax theater. One thing I love about here is that Imax movies are included in your ticket price. Book your tickets in advance and pick a movie time. There is also a small play area downstairs for kids.

Odu's Barry Art Museum is free to visit and no advance tickets are needed.

Check our daily event calendar to see if Ikea is having an event for kids. If so, they are free and will keep kids busy while you browse.
If it is a Monday, Cova Brewing offers free mini muffins, juice, and a craft to your kids when you buy a beverage. Check out the details and head out there!

Glow Golf currently has two locations, and both are indoors. Go during the day and you're likely to be the only ones there, which is perfect for social distancing.

The Military Aviation Museum is mostly indoors, with multiple buildings that you can walk or drive to.
Book a reservation to the Hampton History Museum and check out their exhibits about local history. Our favorite room was the replica of the Native American Longhouse.

Clearly we need skating practice, and Haygood Skating Rink is a great place to get it. They are open with limited capacity, although the playground is still closed.
Both of Funville's locations are open with limited capacity. It's best to book in advance, as tickets are for specific time slots.

Jump! Trampoline Park is open, and their Jumping Beans program is just for ages 6 and under.
The Pink Roller is open for very affordable private rentals. Check out the details and then call for bookings of up to ten people.
Spend the night at Great Wolf Lodge to take advantage of all they have to offer. They have deals during the week which make it more affordable and they also offer day passes.
Cinema Cafe has reopened with distancing. Support this local chain and grab lunch or dinner while checking out one of their $3 classic movies.

Right now thanks to sponsor PNC, MOCA is free. With free parking and free admission, this is the time to check it out.

We love Chrysler Museum and visit a few times a year. Right now the Tickle My Ears program is virtual, and the Wonder Studio is closed, but you can still reserve a free ticket and visit the museum.
The third floor of Nauticus is open, and right now they have a new exhibit about plastic in the oceans. We haven't been to the brand new exhibit yet, but we love Nauticus in general.

Get some energy out at The Bounce House in Virginia Beach. Pay once and get in free all week.
Sky Zone offers toddler times several times a week during the morning.
While only one building at the Virginia Aquarium is open, it is a great place to get some energy out.
With locations in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, The Little Gym offers classes starting with babies and going all the way to teens.

Zumba Kids

When Covid stopped Morgan from teaching her regular YMCA Zumba classes, she knew she needed to do something different. Turning to Zoom, she started teaching her regular Zumba class, but knew that kids needed something to keep them up and moving. So after recently getting her Zumba Kids certification, she started up the classes. The response has been so overwhelming that she knows she can't stop even once isolation is over.
Zumba is an umbrella of classes directed at different ages and abilities. You might remember we did a post awhile back on Zumbini, which is for babies. Zumba Kids is for children ages 3-6, Zumba is for adults, and Zumba Gold is for seniors.
Morgan was actually introduced to Zumba when she took a class with her mom, who promptly signed her up to get her license. (Us mamas are like that!) It began as an extra hobby, but she fell in love with the fact that it combined fitness, dance, and absolute joy in one workout. The kids in her Zoom classes have clung to that joy too and they have an infectious energy that allows everyone to have a blast, even from their living rooms. The choreography is super simple and introduces moves that might be seen in adult classes, but broken down at a lower level.
I met Morgan for the first time when, without knowing me or anything about me, she volunteered at our Team Hurwitz for Pancreatic Cancer Research Zumbathon. I love how she radiates light and love, and these classes are no exception. Find her youtube channel here to get sweating for you and join her Facebook Group here to find her classes for both adults and kids.  Thanks Morgan!

Baby Boutiques

With Babies R Us closed, many of us were looking to shop locally for baby items.  I love supporting local businesses, and I love that these places have more options than your typical Walmart and Target selection. I was able to talk to several business owners about what makes their stores special, and each one has something that makes it unique.
White Rabbit-The White Rabbit has been around for 32 years in Norfolk. It's both a consignment and retail store, with a focus on things being sustainable, long lasting, and engaging for kids. As a mom of three little ones, the owner understands that moms are looking for things that are unique and cool both for their own kids and as gifts. Free gift wrapping is available. I love that they have a variety of in store events such as hand made silhouettes that friends of mine are obsessed with and mini photo sessions. They carry lots of locally made nursery artwork, jewelry, and bows. Look for another silhouette session around Mother's Day.
334 w. 21st street, Norfolk VA
Rockabye Baby OBX-Started in the Outer Banks 40 years ago; it was brought to Hampton Roads 5 years ago. They started out as all new items, but have moved to more consignment items. They sell both clothing and gear. half and half. Open Tues-Sat and always closed on Sunday except summertime. They carry brands that other local places don't have, like Mayoral, Feltmen brothers for classic look. They also try to keep everything as reasonably priced as possible, which sets them apart. Their goal is to keep everyday wear under $40.00,
1201 Laskin Rd #200, Virginia Beach, VA 23451
Kidtique- Located across from Lynnhaven Mall,  Kidtique just celebrated their one year mark, and it is 100% consignment with sizes premie to 18 in teens as well as gear, equipment, and toys. They even have maternity wear. Parents can bring items in and starting at the end of the month will be able to get cash for them rather than sell only on consignment. Their specialty is affordable prices for their clients.
2720 N Mall Dr # 140, Virginia Beach, VA 23452

Little Shoppes on High- We did a post on Little Shops on High a few summers ago while spending the day in Olde Town Portsmouth. They are four shops in one building including one for babies and children. Little Shops sells lots of Melissa and Doug style toys and we always end up getting the reusable coloring place mats and crayons from them.

Little Peas Boutique- Little Pears just opened in Chesapeake. The mama who runs is has a degree in fashion design and worked for Guess Jeans in LA, Nordstrom, and believes in clean and organized aesthetics. She tries to find items that are not mass produced. They have a physical store but also an online site that offers two day shipping or store pickup.

The rest of the stores I wasn't able to talk to, but I did some digging on their sites.

Velveteen Rabbit - The Velveteen Rabbit is a true boutique offering high end, quality pieces for babies and children. From furniture to gear, clothing, and toys, the Velveteen Rabbit's slogan is "only the best for your baby." Look to them for specialty items such as Christening and Baptism needs.
7386 Harbour Towne Pkwy. #19, Suffolk, VA 23435

Sprout -Sprout was born from a mama who was tired of spending tons on her son's clothes which he quickly outgrew. The consignment shop offers high end and quality clothing at a lower price.
1556 Laskin Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23451

Carousel- Located in Historic Williamsburg, The Carousel offers traditional and comtemporary pieces for infants, children, and tweens.
420 W Duke of Gloucester St., Williamsburg VA

Le Bebe Chic Boutique- With a focus on chemical free, organic options, Le Bebe Chic offers everything from clothes to gear to a line of baby Babiators (adorable!). They do offer a resell program, accepting "organic, sustainable, ethical, and even practical." This is a store that tries to stay away from mass production and high chemical toys and clothes.
237 E. Hanbury Rd. 315, Chesapeake Virginia 23322
An honorable mention, although not a baby store is Mary Barnett's. They have been around for over 50 years and actually began as a hardware store. Now a gift and decor store, their baby and kids section continues to grow and you'll find unique items there. They have standard books, bibs and clothing, but also special things like tooth fairy jars or special frames. All kids items can be wrapped for you there on the spot. The owner of this store is lovely and I felt like I was talking to a friend!

Busch Gardens Christmas Town 2019

Holy Christmas lights. If you haven't been to Christmas Town at Busch Gardens yet this year, here's what to expect. The park has over 10 million lights, and they are amazing. From the second you walk into England and look up, you can tell that you're going to be in for a beautiful experience. But the crowds were intense. I've never seen it so crowded. Maybe it was because not all the rides were open to take up the time of as many people, but it was hard to walk. Go into it knowing this... and bring a snack because there was a 30 minute wait to get into some of the food places, just to get in line inside. The train was a highlight (obviously.. that's all RT cares about!) but we had to wait about 45 minutes for that also. Also open was Invadr, Verbolton, the buckets, Mach Tower, and many of the smaller and kid rides. Seasame Forest and Land of the Dragons were both mostly open too.
Another highlight was the peanut butter hot chocolate, which was well worth the $5.00. We grabbed that while Neil and RT warmed up in the arcade. Nothing like the taste of a melted Reese's cup to warm you up.
The park had tons of shows going on, both indoors and outdoors. Outside in Germany we passed through Wilkommenhaus, a techno light show projected on the building and O'Tannenbaum a timed musical light show outside of the Fest Haus. Also outside is Elmo's Christmas Wish, Believe, and 'Twas The Night plus carolers spread throughout the park.  Inside there is Deck The Halls, Gloria, and Scrooge No More. Also inside of Ireland's Castle O'Sullivan is Santa's Fireside Feast. For photos check out Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, which is located in the line of Appolo's Chariot. In addition to Rudolph kids can meet Clarice, Yukon Cornelius, Bumble, and a Snowman. Santa's Workshop is located in the Dark Castle and has cookie decorating too. New this year is a Christmas Tree Maze with over 500 live trees. This is where you'll see a mention of Hanukah!
A couple ways to save some money:
  • The Souvenir Hot Beverage Mug is $8.39 but lets you get $2.59 refills. You can refill with coffee, hot chocolate, and soda. (No Starbucks or Ghirardelli)
  • Bring your regular Busch Gardens refillable cup. You can still use it.
  • A cup of water is free.
  • Look into the online prepaid Meal Deal options.
Christmas Town is open until January 5th. Be sure to check social medias before you go. The park has been known to sell out for the night! Be mentally ready when you go to take slow strolls, have some wait time, and enjoy the beautiful lights! Final tip we discovered: When you enter the park, in the stroller and wheelchair rental kiosk, they have air pressure (in case your stroller tire is flat, like ours was) and even bottles for sale (in case you forget one, which we didn't this time!). A reminder, there are nursing stations throughout the park.
All in all, a beautiful night.

Tidewater Holiday Experience Guide

I know, I know. Every kid loves getting gifts on the holidays, and moms dream of the moment when their kid sees a mountain of wrapped gifts. This mama is tired though. Tired of cleaning up toys. Tired of stepping on toys. Tired of throwing toys away. For the last two years we have been asking for gift cards and experiences over toys and yet somehow my boys are not deprived.

We have been lucky enough to have been gifted a zoo membership from my mom and aunt who get together for their birthdays. That membership alone has given us the ability to participate in all that they offer plus their swaps. My cousin gave us a Children's Museum membership and we have used the reciprocity program in so many places to get in for free. Memberships are the way to go if you can swing it or if you can get a group to go in on them together.

Here's my list of top experiences for our area:

Here is a more extensive, more general Hampton Roads list for all toddlers, not so focused on our personal likes and here is a birthday list with experience ideas too. Check these places on Black Friday for deals!
