Coleman Collection: Portsmouth Cultural Museum

#ad Nostalgia hits hard this time of year, and no place makes me think of being a kid in Hampton Roads like thinking of the Winter Wonderland Coleman Collection at the Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center. As a kid, I remember both my grandparents taking me on several field trips across the tunnel to see the collection. The display began in 1965 after the owners, Junie and Millie Lancaster, were inspired by the animatronics in Disney's Small World at the New York World's State Fair. It started as a way to bring people into the Coleman Nursery during the winter months. In the 1980s the nursery suffered a horrible fire damaging parts of the collection, but the community rallied and raised donations of money and decorations to help bring it back. It ultimately closed in 2003 and the collection was bought by the City of Portsmouth Museums, where it has been on display every winter at the Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center since 2004.

The display takes about six weeks to set up, featuring some of the original animatronics, Christmas decorations, beautifully adorned trees, sparkling lights, enchanting winter scenes, holiday music, and more. Keep an eye out for modern-day surprises hidden throughout (think Minions, How to Train Your Dragon, and other fun touches)! Each year brings new holiday scenes, and the staff creates a special scavenger hunt, which is always our favorite part.

One thing I love about Olde Towne Portsmouth is how easy it is to get there and to find ample free parking. The Winter Wonderland collection is on display now until December 28th, Thursdays 10-4, Fridays 12-8, Saturdays 12-8, and Sundays 10-4. Admission is $3.00 per person, children under 2 are free. Santa is on site Fridays from 5-8, Saturdays 3-8, Sundays 12-4 through December 21st. There are special programs every weekend including face painting, musical performances, art activities, and much more. The Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center is located at 400 High Street.

WinterFest 2026

WinterFest is back and bigger than ever this year! New this year is Kingdom of the Snow Queen, an immersive magical trail through the indoor museum  that we loved so much we walked through it twice.

We almost made this mistake of missing the Snow Queen's Royal Circus, a 35 minute show with jugglers, magicians, and an aerialist. Shows are at 6:00 and 7:30, plus 9:00 on weekends. You'll also want to say hello the talking Christmas tree and talking polar bear.

Then, you'll head outside where you'll see over two million lights. People have told me before that they didn't realize you could go down inside the battleship, so make sure you don't miss it! We loved the snowball mayhem section which was outside on the porch of Nauticus, too!

Along the riverwalk you'll want to see the trees in Town Point Park and the beautiful Pagoda. You can also purchase a combo ticket for a 30 minute ride around the harbor on the Victory Rover. It will allow you to have a great view from the water.

You'll want to purchase your tickets online to save $3.00. Adults are $22.00, children are $18.00, two and under are free. There is a military discount. You'll select your entrance time within a one hour window. We spent about 3 hours total inside of the museum and the ship itself, plus more time to do the Riverwalk. You don't want to miss this season!

Winter Nature Nights

Visit the Virginia Living Museum from December 19th to December 22nd and you'll be able to catch the Winter Nature Nights from 5:30-8:15. Tickets are $14 for ages 3 and up, and includes strolling through the decorated museum and lights outside on the boardwalk trail. You'll want to see the story walk for the book "How Do Dinosaurs Say Merry Christmas", while you check out the decorated dinos.
Meet Santa, play winter games, listen to live music, decorate and eat cookies, and drink hot chocolate, for no additional charge. A highlight for my kids was the scavenger hunt throughout the museum.
For an additional price you can purchase tickets to a holiday planetarium show, Star of Wonder or Laser Holiday.

Richmond Tacky Lights

Tacky Lights have been seen all over Richmond for the last 30 years, but this is the first year that we have seen them. The tradition goes back to 1985 when a Richmond DJ booked a transportation bus to tour ten houses. It was a huge hit then, and still is now. Official houses on the tour must have over 40,000 lights to be considered.

You can drive around to check them out yourself for free, or book a tour through one of the many transportation services in Richmond. Checkout the list here:  Although many houses aren't officially on the list, driving around the city you'll see lots of houses that have decided to lean into the tacky decorations.

Hometown Christmas: First Baptist Norfolk

First Baptist Norfolk is hosting Hometown Christmas this year, a free family friendly festival with local vendors, train rides, music, sock skating, and a petting zoo. Hometown Christmas is open this Saturday and Sunday, December 18 and 19th. Saturday's food trucks are Luvabowls and Mello Beans. On Sunday Yolees G-Dawgz, Miami Fuzion, and Bear House Coffee will be there. Grab a scavenger hunt when you arrive, and get stickers from each station, On your way out grab your prize, an activity book, stuffed animal, and gingerbread house.

Schedule as follows:

2:00-6:00:Barrel Train

4:00-4:30: Brass Quartet

5:30-7:30:Pictures with Santa

5:30: Tree lighting and snow

5:45: Roaming Carolers

7:00 Carol Singalong

8:00 end

City Center at Oyster Point Lights and Holiday Cheer

We took a visit to Newport News' Oyster Point for the first time this week. Take a walk around the lake and see the ten minute light show that plays every half hour. While walking around, you'll encounter 16 snow machines, 55 trees, and a 50 foot tree, all tuned to music. The lights are on between 5-9, with a photo pavilion Thursday through Sunday from 5-8.

If you head there this Saturday, December 18th from 12-3, you'll catch their Holiday Cheer program with free hot chocolate and cookies, be able to paint homemade ornaments, and take photos with an 8.5 foot elf!

Hermitage Museum and Gardens: Gingerbread Houses

We visit the Hermitage Museum and Gardens a few times a year because the boys love watching the cranes moving the containers outside, but we have never been during the holidays before. On display now is their second annual gingerbread house contest and display. From now until December 19th, stop in to view and vote on your favorite house. There are three categories; adult, child, and family. I had kits ready at home, so we left and made our own. We actually did the best we have ever done, but it still ended up falling before I could snag a picture! The Hermitage is free to visit until 2021, but donations are accepted.

Tidewater Big Train Operators 2021 Annual Holiday Train Display

Avalon Church of Christ is once again hosting the Tidewater Big Train Operators Holiday Train show. Stop by this week from 5:30-8:30 or Saturday from 10:00-4:00. This event is totally free, but raffle tickets for a G-scale train are on sale and donations are accepted. Grab a scavenger hunt from the front table and look for items as you walk through. Masks must be worn at all times. Children should bring their letters for Santa!

Avalon Church of Christ is located at 844 Woodstock Rd., Virginia Beach, Virginia 23464.

WinterFest On the Wisconsin 2021

Nauticus opened WinterFest last year as a Covid safe alternative to Charles Dickens' Christmas Towne,  but it was so successful that they brought it back this year! Last year's post has the details of the original WinterFest, but they have added even more this year! New this year are differently themed light zones, a new restaurant located inside the battleship, additional lights, and a talking gingerbread man. We almost missed it, but be aware that there are two below deck areas to view this year! The entrance to the first is located by the Spring section of lights, and the other at the back of the ship near the large Christmas Tree. Be at this tree when they light it for a surprise visit by the Grinch, which includes selfie time!

Also new, families can have a Santa Experience, where kids can meet and talk to Santa. For a $5 donation per person, families will be individually greeted and children can tell Santa their Christmas wishes. Pictures are encouraged.

Live music returns Friday and Saturday nights. Returning from last year is the ever popular talking Christmas tree, elves inside Santa's workshop, and the train display. A tip: buy your tickets online to save $5.00! Online prices Wednesday-Thursday are $9.50 for adults and $7 for children for members and $12.50 adult, $10 for children for nonmembers. Friday-Sunday is $12.50 for adults and $10 for children for members and $14.50 for adults and $12 for children for nonmembers. Timed tickets are required. When you're headed in or out, be sure to hit the snowfall, which happens every twenty minutes in the Nauticus lobby. Also, don't miss the multiple photo opportunities inside the building and the gift shop for holiday offerings.
Reminder that strollers are not allowed on the ship, and that you'll be helping your littles down the ladder inside the ship, so you may want to bring a carrier. Our two year old navigated the ship fine, but keep this in mind if you've got babies!

Zoolumination

This winter, 29 new types of animals are at the zoo. These inflatable, light up animals are larger than life. At night visitors can drive through the zoo and listen to their stories. During the day, visitors can walk through the zoo (at no additional cost) and check out the animals. They are beautiful, but at night they are GRAND.
Nightime hours are Sunday through Thursday 5-9, with a cost of members $35 and nonmembers $45 for the whole car. Fridays and Saturdays the hours are 5-11, members $40 and nonmembers $50.
We really enjoyed this, although we are zoo members and we go often. I thought that the zoo did a really good job of turning it into a drive through and using some parts of the zoo that I wouldn't have thought to drive on. I would suggest going at night, as the lights transform the animals into art!

2020 Experience Guide

This is one of my favorite posts every year, but going out in 2020 certainly adds a level of complication. Obviously we want to be safe, and so this year I'm looking for places where we can social distance and still enjoy an experience.

A reminder to always check out our discount page. It is updated regularly, and has deals like iFly, Family Fun Xperience, and more!

Holiday Lights at the Beach

Open again at the Oceanfront are the Holiday Lights at the Beach. Stay in your car and drive on the boardwalk to see the nautical themed lights next to the Atlantic Ocean. Tickets are $17.00 and must be purchased ahead of time online, but there is no specific day that they must be used unless you purchased a Military Monday ticket. A tip, we waited almost no time going on a weekday, but I've heard there is a line on the weekend. Go on a weeknight if you don't want to wait! Enter the boardwalk at 2nd street and Atlantic Ave.  A huge thanks to 1-800-Got-Junk who gave us our tickets. If you've got junk.. they will haul it away! Be sure when you're leaving to hit 43rd street to check out all of their lights too! The whole street decorates.

The lights are on nightly from 5:30-10:00 from now until January 3rd. Pack some hot chocolate and head down to the beach! Special thanks to sponsors 1-800-GOT-JUNK for our tickets!

Snow Globe Spectacular

Spend an evening at Town Center Virginia Beach and check out Snow Globe Spectacular with live entertainment every weekend in December. On the hour is a light show in the giant tree followed by dancing by characters from the Nutcracker, a ballerina and a toy solider, both inside their own globes.

Santa is also on the scene at a communication station. Kids enter the station and talk to Santa via microphone. Walk around the area to check out the many themed snow globes.

During the day there are crafts and letters to Santa, and at night once it's all lit up the live entertainment begins. For adults visiting, receive a free Lyft ride with proof of a $30.00 purchase at a Town Center establishment.

We of course ended our night with a trip to Royal Chocolate. I always love to stop here because they have donated to the Pancreatic Cancer auction, and I always so appreciate companies who give back. It's an added bonus that everything from there is delicious. Try the peanut butter hot chocolate!

A Morning Adventure in Downtown Norfolk

Sometimes it's fun to play tourist in your own town, and right now there is a ton of free stuff to do. First stop is the NEON District, Norfolk's official art district. Neon stands for the New Energy of Norfolk, and it has socially distance-approved offerings. Stop by The Plot which often is full of events by Open Norfolk before making your way through the district looking at the hundreds of murals and works of public art.

Heading down Granby Strreet, we stopped at Lamia's Crepes to recharge. Open for breakfast and a crepe covered with Nutella is a win! Walking further down Granby we stopped at the corner for what we call "the steps" but I'm sure is something very profound and artsy, but fun to climb on. From here, cross the street to check out this huge tree, which looks like it plays to music and lights when it's dark.

The MacArthur Memorial is always free, and we popped into the small building to see the 1,000 paper cranes on display. At the age of two, Sadako Sasaki was exposed to radiation from the bombing of Hiroshima. At age 12 she began making paper cranes as a wish for a long, healthy life. She folded more than 1,000, but died in 1955. This year on the 75th anniversary of the bomb dropping, students in Virginia and North Carolina volunteered their time to fold 1,000. Japanese culture says that anyone who folds 1,000 cranes is granted a wish, good luck, or a long life.

Last step on our journey was Selden Market. Selden Market offers short-term leases for small businesses that are looking for their start. Right now at Selden the Atlantic Coast Gaugers Tidewater Division has set up their train exhibit! Check our daily calendar for hours. It was a huge high to end on for a group of four little boys and some tired mamas!
